No More Underarm Holes: Tips for Knitting Perfect Sleeves

Hey knitting pals! Welcome back to the Staple Tee KAL! We're in the home stretch now, and it's time to tackle those sleeves. I know picking up stitches and knitting the sleeves can be a bit daunting, but don't worry – I've got you covered with all the tips and tricks you need to create sleeves that fit perfectly and look amazing.

And if you missed the livestream (or just want a refresher), grab your yarn and needles, and let's dive into the recap!

And if you haven't joined the KAL yet, it's never too late! Just sign up for the Staple Tee KAL here.

Key Highlights

  • Picking Up Stitches (The Stress-Free Way): We dove into the nitty-gritty of picking up stitches under the arm, starting from the middle and working our way around. And the secret to avoiding holes? Pick up TWO legs of those on those additional stitches!

  • Double-Check Your Work! I reminded you to count your stitches and check for any mistakes as you go, especially in those tricky underarm sections. We all make mistakes, so no shame in ripping back a few rows if you need to!

  • Finishing Touches Preview: We'll cover hemming and weaving in ends in more detail next time, but I gave you a little sneak peek of what's to come. (Spoiler alert: we're going to put those ends to work!)

  • Show & Tell We checked out some of your gorgeous WIPs on Discord and talked about all sorts of fun modifications and color choices. You guys are so creative!

  • Prize Time Reminder: Have you finished your Staple Tee? Don't forget to fill out the prize submission form for a chance to win some awesome goodies! And that's just the beginning! We covered so much more in the livestream, so be sure to check out the replay for all the details and demos.

And that's not all! We chatted about a whole bunch of other fun stuff, like yarns, travels, my career change, my upcoming Staple Tank pattern, and the ever-supportive KAL community on Discord. Be sure to watch the replay for all the details!

A Closer Look at the Details

Let's Get Those Sleeves Started!

We kicked off the livestream with a couple of updates: there are only two livestreams left in the KAL (eek, it's going by so fast!), and I reminded you to fill out the prize submission form if you've finished your tee.

Then, we got down to business and started knitting those sleeves!

The Scoop on Picking Up Stitches

Picking up stitches can be a little nerve-wracking, but I promise, it's not as scary as it seems. Here's the lowdown:

  1. Counting is Key: Before you start, count your underarm cast-on stitches to make sure you know what you're working with. Then, find the center stitch – that's your starting point!

  2. Two Legs Are Better Than One: To create a seamless underarm, make sure to pick up both legs of each cast-on stitch. It might feel a bit fiddly at first, but it's worth it for a smooth, seamless join.

  3. Pick up Two Loops for Those Additional Stitches: To avoid pesky underarm holes, pick up two loops rather than one. When you insert your needle into the loops, pull up. If it creates a big hole, try a different loop or two. If it is nice and tight, you’re good to go!

  4. Use a Smaller Needle: If you're having trouble getting your needle under both legs, try using a smaller needle size. This can make it a bit easier to maneuver.

Once you’ve picked up the stitches, you’re in the clear! Just keep knitting in the round.

Tip: If you're worried about losing track of where to pick up your stitches, try using a contrasting yarn to mark the spots.

Bonus Tip: You can always try on your tee as you go to check the sleeve length and fit. If you want to make any adjustments (like adding a little extra length), feel free to experiment!

A Little Knitting Chit-Chat...

We had some fun conversations about all sorts of things, like my career transition (from English teacher to marketing manager and knitwear designer), my obsession with the Staple Tank design (it's coming along swimmingly!), and even our favorite local yarn stores.

Finishing Touches: Cuffs & Seams

We didn't dive into finishing techniques too much in this livestream, but we'll cover them in detail next time! We'll chat about folding the hems, weaving in ends strategically to fix any holes or gaps, and blocking your tee to perfection.

Participant Interaction

Chatter from the KAL Community: All the Feels!

Our Livestreams and Discord are the place to be for knitting camaraderie, and this week was no exception! We chatted about everything from weekend plans to yarn store adventures to knitting for loved ones. Here's a glimpse into what's been happening in our awesome KAL community:

  • Some of you are speed demons, already working on your second (or even third!) Staple Tee! (Way to go, overachievers! 😉)

  • Someone’s making a staple tee for her mom. (So sweet! And I think I need to make one for my mom too!)

  • We're also experiencing some of the classic knitting struggles, like yarn chicken (ugh, the worst!) and accidental purl bumps (we've all been there).

  • And can I just say, I'm obsessed with all the creative mods you guys are coming up with? Those rolled hems and colorwork are looking super cute!

Questions

The Q&A was lively, with lots of great questions about everything from picking up stitches to choosing the right sleeve length. Here are a few highlights:

  • Q: I have a little bunching under the arms – what should I do?

    • A: Don't worry, that's totally normal! Blocking is going to help with that.

  • Q: What is a yarn crawl?

    • A: It's like a bar crawl, but for yarn stores! You hop from shop to shop, checking out all the goodies and maybe even scoring some deals. 😉

Bonus Tip: I also shared my favorite local yarn store, Fibre Space in Alexandria, VA. If you're ever in the area, definitely check them out!

  • Q: Is it okay to pick up stitches from one side of the underarm instead of the middle?

    • A: You bet! It's really just a matter of preference. I like starting in the middle so the beginning-of-round marker sits at the bottom of the sleeve. It helps to create a smooth folded hem. But honestly, you can pick up stitches however you like – there's no right or wrong way to do it.

  • Q: Would a sleeve length halfway between the shoulder and elbow work?

    • A: Absolutely! You can customize the sleeve length however you like.

Tips

  • Knit the first stitch of each round a little tighter to prevent puckering under the arms.

  • Try on your tee as you go to check the sleeve length and fit.

  • A quick steam block can work wonders for fixing fit issues and smoothing out the fabric.

  • Homework Time (It's Almost Over!)

This week, your mission is to knit those sleeves! We're almost at the finish line, so keep up the great work.
