The Staple Skirt

The Staple Skirt

The Staple Skirt is a knit skirt that is customizable to your size, shape, and desired length. With it being made-to-measure and having a waistband, it will hug your curves perfectly! The folded hem at the bottom balances out the simple design that will make this skirt a closet staple. Dress it up or down to make your outfit pop!

The best part? It is made-to-measure using your unique body measurements and you can use any weight yarn! This skirt will fit everyone like a dream, and the simple design makes it a true closet staple.

  • The Staple Skirt is an interactive, made-to-measure pattern that calculates the number of stitches, rows, and yardage for a pattern. The benefit of this type of pattern is that it makes your pattern size inclusive to virtually any body size (theoretically, it should even work for an infant!) and it allows you to use any yarn and any gauge! This is done by allowing the user to type in their body’s measurements and gauge onto the pattern. Then, in the background, the pattern will calculate all the math within the pattern to fit the person perfectly.

It is recommended that the pattern is accessed through Adobe Reader.

  • This pattern is suitable for confident beginners and intermediate knitters!

    • Make it as short or as long as you wish, with knee-length being the maximum length.

    • You have the option to add a slit or leave it whole.

  • Step-by-step written + video instructions are included for each technique:

    • Increases and decreases

    • Following increase and decrease plans

    • Folding a waistband

    • Whip stitching a hem

    • Stockinette in the round

  • You can use any size circular needles for this pattern. I recommend using a needle size that creates a nice fabric with the yarn you’ve chosen to work with. If you don’t want your skirt to be see-through, I recommend sizing down your needles by .5-1mm to create a tighter fabric.

In terms of needle sizes, you will need:

    • Needle Size 1: Main working needle size that you use to achieve gauge

    • Needle Size 2: .5mm smaller than Needle Size 1

In terms of cord lengths for your circular needles, you will need:

24" to 40" (61cm to 101cm) circular needles for Needle Sizes 1 and 2. Cord length depends on body size and personal preference.

    • 1.5" wide elastic waistband (length should be the size of your waist measurement)

    • Stitch Markers

    • Sewing Needle or Sewing Machine

    • Tapestry Needle

    • Scissors

    • Measuring Tape

  • You can use any weight and any size yarn for this pattern! However, I do NOT recommend:

    • Using yarn larger than bulky weight

    • Yarn made from plant-based fibers (cotton, bamboo, linen, etc.)

    Amount of yarn needed:

The amount of yarn you need will depend on your measurements and intended length as well as your gauge. There is a yarn estimate calculator within the pattern to provide you with a more precise estimate, or you can refer to the following estimates based on the Craft Yarn Council’s sizing standards and different yarn weights:

    Hip measurement: 34 (36, 40, 44, 48) (53, 55, 57, 62) inches; 86 (92, 102, 112, 122) (135, 140, 145, 157) cm

    Fingering weight: 705 (773, 880, 1008, 1127) (1369, 1451, 1590) yards; 645 (707, 805, 922, 1031) (1158, 1252, 1327, 1454) meters

    DK weight: 598 (657, 750, 854, 962) (1083, 1160, 1237, 1348) yards; 547 (601, 686, 781, 880) (990, 1060, 1131, 1233) meters

    Worsted weight: 396 (433, 498, 568, 633) (716, 769, 817, 895) yards; 362 (396, 455, 519, 579) (655, 703, 747, 818) meters

    Bulky weight: 363 (398, 454, 519, 578) (652, 699, 748, 819) yards; 332 (364, 415, 475, 529) (596, 639, 684, 749) meters
