Unique Properties of Cotton Yarn and Why It Requires Special Care
Natural and breathable fiber
Cotton is a natural, plant-based fiber that has been used for centuries in creating textiles. One of its most appreciated properties is its breathability, which allows air to circulate freely through the fabric. This characteristic makes cotton garments comfortable to wear, especially during warmer months. However, this natural composition also means that cotton can be more delicate and susceptible to damage if not cared for properly.
High absorbency
Cotton fibers are highly absorbent, which means they can easily soak up moisture and retain it for a longer period. While this attribute is great for keeping you cool and dry in hot weather, it also means that cotton garments can take longer to dry and may be prone to mildew or mold growth if not dried and stored correctly.
Tendency to shrink and wrinkle
Cotton fibers have a natural tendency to shrink when exposed to high temperatures or aggressive washing methods. This can lead to ill-fitting garments and disappointment if your hard work doesn't last as long as you'd hoped. Additionally, cotton is prone to wrinkling and may require extra care when laundering and storing to maintain a polished appearance.
Color fading
While cotton fibers can hold dye well, they can also be prone to color fading over time, especially when exposed to direct sunlight or harsh detergents. Proper washing and storage techniques are crucial in preserving the vibrant colors of your cotton yarn garments and projects.
Considering these unique properties of cotton, it's essential to follow proper care guidelines when washing, drying, and storing your cotton yarn and finished projects. By doing so, you'll ensure that your creations maintain their quality, appearance, and longevity. Read on to discover essential tips and tricks for caring for your cotton yarn!

Washing Cotton Yarn
Choosing the right detergent
First things first, let's talk about detergent. The type of detergent you use can make a huge difference in maintaining the quality of your cotton yarn. Choose a mild and gentle detergent that's free of harsh chemicals or bleach. Your cotton yarn will thank you! My favorite gentle detergent for my cotton knits is this delicate Eucalan Lavender soap. If you’re not a fan of lavender, this brand has many different scents and even scent-free options.
Washing techniques
Hand washing
If you want to give your cotton yarn the TLC it deserves, hand washing is the way to go. Here's how to do it:
Clean a sink, tub, or basin that you will use to wash your garments.
Fill the container with lukewarm water, as extreme temperatures can harm your yarn. Add your gentle soap to the water.
Soak your yarn or garment in soapy water for about 15 minutes, gently swishing it around to remove dirt. After soaking, take your garment out of the soapy water, gently squeezing to remove excess water. Dump the soapy water out of the container and refill it with soap-free lukewarm water. Place the garment back into the water, and let it soak for another 15 minutes. Gently swish your garment around again, this time to remove soap.
Machine washing
If you're short on time or have a big batch of cotton yarn items, machine washing is a convenient option. Just remember these key tips:
Check your yarn label to make sure it is okay to machine wash.
Select a delicate cycle with a low spin speed to avoid damaging your yarn.
Place your cotton yarn garments in a mesh laundry bag to protect them from tangling with other items.
Stain removal tips
Uh-oh! Got a stain on your favorite cotton yarn creation? Don't panic. Here's what you can do:
Pre-treatment options: Apply a gentle stain remover or dab some mild detergent on the stain before washing, and as soon as you can after the stain happens.
Gentle stain removal methods: Gently rub the stained area with your fingers or use a soft toothbrush to loosen the dirt. Avoid scrubbing too hard, as it may damage the yarn.
Drying Cotton Yarn
Air-drying
To speed up the drying process, gently squeeze out excess water as you remove your hand knits from the water you rinsed them in. Then, lay them on a towel, and roll the knits into the towel, gently squeezing as you go. You can repeat the towel rolling process again with a fresh, dry towel again to remove even more excess moisture.
Once you’re done with the towel rolling, lay your freshly washed cotton garment on a blocking mat, plastic bag, or a clean, dry towel. Gently reshape it to its original form. Avoid placing your garment in direct sunlight, as it can cause fading. Then, simply wait for your garment to dry! Depending on the density of the cotton yarn, it could take a day or two to completely dry.
I want to take a minute to also explain that line-drying is NOT recommended. Hanging your heavy, wet cotton garment with clothespins or hangers will cause the fibers to stretch and warp, damaging your beautiful hand knits.
Machine drying
If you are thinking of using a machine dryer, double-check your yarn’s care instructions first. If the instructions don’t recommend machine drying, then I also recommend not machine drying. However, if they say it’s okay, opt for a low heat setting to minimize shrinkage. It's also a good idea to periodically check your garments to ensure they don't over-dry or aren’t being damaged in the process.
Storing Cotton Hand Knit Garments
Proper storage methods
When it comes to storing cotton hand-knit garments, folding is the best option. This method helps prevent stretching and distortion that can occur when hanging heavier, and even lightweight, hand knit items.
Store your hand-knit cotton garments in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading or discoloration. Use dry, breathable storage containers, like fabric bins, cedar chests, or cotton pillowcases, to maintain the freshness and quality of your garments.
Avoiding pests and damage
To keep pesky critters away from your hand-knit cotton garments, consider using natural repellents like lavender, cedar, or eucalyptus. These options not only smell great but also help protect your garments from unwanted invaders.
Ensure your garment storage area is well-ventilated and dry. Avoid storing hand-knit cotton items in damp or humid spaces, as these conditions can lead to mold and mildew growth, which can damage your precious creations.
Organizing your hand-knit cotton garment collection
Organize your hand-knit cotton garments by type, size, or season for easy access. Labeling each item with important details like fiber content or care instructions can also be helpful in maintaining your collection.
There are countless creative storage ideas for your hand-knit cotton garment collection, from using under-bed storage bins to outfitting a dedicated closet with shelves or cubbies. Choose a solution that fits your space and complements your personal style.
Fixing Loose Ends
If any of your woven in ends become loose during the washing process, no need to fret! Simply weave them back in if possible. If you trust the security of the beginning of the woven in end, you can always trim the loose bit as well. You can also try using Fray Check, which is a permanent, clear liquid seam sealant that prevents fabric from fraying and secures your ends!
Preventing and fixing wrinkles and creases
Want to keep your cotton yarn garments looking crisp and fresh? Gently smooth out any wrinkles with your hands before air-drying, and fold your garments immediately after they've dried to prevent new creases from forming.
If your garment is wrinkled, I recommend using a handheld steamer rather than an iron to gently steam out the wrinkles.
Proper care and storage of your hand-knit cotton garments are essential for maintaining their quality and prolonging their lifespan. By following these essential tips for storing your cotton creations, you'll be able to enjoy your handiwork for years to come.
